Week Seven: Tim Smith's Presentation on 3/7/2021

Tim Smith’s presentation was interesting and focused on the idea of montage towards the end. Mr. Smith stated that the “American” montage was very different from the idea of “montage” in and of itself. An American montage consists of a space of time with sections cut out and dropped, and the rest compressed together with a soundtrack playing, and little to no dialogue. The montage is meant to create meaning through arrangement. In the “Slaughter” video, scenes of a battlefield were mixed with footage of a cow being killed and butchered. This video insinuated that war was slaughtering and butchering, and there is nothing romantic about it. Another video Mr. Smith showed was meant to be a deconstruction of the narrative, and in it, elements of sound were mixed with nonsensical footage, such as a cow on a bed being shooed away by a woman, and dogs barking at a man being arrested.
